Performance, Transmission, & Engine

2021 Mercedes-Benz GLE

This year’s midsize luxury SUV is equipped with a 255-hp turbo engine with a 273 lb-ft torque rating in the GLE 350 trim level. If you choose to upgrade to the GLE 450 or the GLE 580, you get a 362-hp turbo inline-6 or a 483-hp Biturbo V8, respectively. These monster engines are coupled with the EQ Boost Integrated Starter Generator that generates 21-hp itself while helping to keep a low emission rating. The 2021 GLE comes with a standard nine-speed transmission called the 9G-Tronic and fingertip shift paddles, allowing you to take control of the gears whenever you want. While the standard rear-wheel drive GLE 350 SUV respectably accelerates from 0-60 in 7 seconds flat, the fastest SUV in this line is the GLE 580 4MATIC, which has an acceleration of 0-60 in under 5 seconds.

2021 BMW X5

The base-level BMW X5 comes with a 3.0-liter BMW TwinPower Turbo inline 6-cylinder engine with 335 hp and 331 lb-ft of torque. It’s also equipped with an eight-speed automatic transmission that accelerates the SUV from 0-60 in under 6 seconds. The top model X5 m50i is equipped with a 4.4-liter V8 that has an acceleration from 0-60 comparable to the Mercedes-Benz GLE. So, if power is the deciding factor for which SUV suits you, the BMW X5 might slightly come out ahead in this particular category.

Interior Design

2021 Mercedes-Benz GLE

Now onto the areas that this Mercedes-Benz SUV really shines, the interior design. The new GLE was redesigned with a more spacious cabin that’s laced with leading-edge luxurious technology and features. From the multicontour heated front seats with massage to the industry-leading Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) infotainment system, this new GLE is one of the classiest SUVs on the market. With optional power-adjustable 2nd and 3rd-row seating and a standard 64-color ambient lighting system, you and your passengers can ride around Charlotte in class and style.

2021 BMW X5

This BMW model comes standard with 16-way power seat functions in the front seats, but doesn’t have the massage ability or power-adjustable 3rd-row seating. While it does feel like a luxury SUV on the inside, the technology and trims throughout the cabin fall a little short of the Mercedes-Benz GLE. And while the BMW X5 does have a respectable 56.5 cubic feet of cargo capacity, the new GLE surpasses that with 74.9 cubic feet of cargo space. Nearly 20 extra cubic feet to help make the Mercedes-Benz GLE the clear winner of this category.

Exterior Design

This is where subjectivity comes into play. While both models have a sleek exterior design, the Mercedes-Benz GLE subtly exudes luxury with its elegant curves and sophisticated feel. BMW takes a more edgy approach with harder cuts and pointier features. So again, although this is subjective, we think it’s no real comparison between the two. The new GLE is the definition of class and easily takes the cake in this category.
